Do food preparations prior to cooking food. This keeps you safe, and saves you money. Working with hot pans and stoves while you are distracted with prep tasks is a recipe for injury, and you tend to leave burners and ovens on longer if you are still preparing ingredients.

Place any unripened fruit that you buy in a plastic bag that is perforated. As a fruit becomes ripe, it puts off ethylene gasses. When air is allowed to reach the fruit, the gas will not escape, thereby maintaining its flavor and freshness for a longer period of time.

Spices should be replaced every six months. What happens a lot is that spices are kept in a household for far too long and lose a lot of their flavor. When you have to buy certain spices for specific dishes, be sure to give some of the spice away to a family or friend, if you do not plan on using all of it, before it will go bad.

Is fresh basil something you cook with often? If so, put lots of fresh basil into a glass. Make sure the the stems are completely covered with water. Basil will stay fresh in bowl of water for up to four weeks. If you change the water occasionally, the basil will even grow roots in the water. Occasionally trim the basil, which will encourage more growth, and you will be able to have the benefits of fresh basil for quite some time.

After a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving or any other occasion, do not discard the leftovers. Instead, cut the turkey into smaller pieces, store it in a container that's airtight, and freeze it. Frozen turkey will keep for weeks in the freezer and can be unfrozen and used for a variety of dishes.

Consider mixing flavored butter for a simple method of adding some additional flavor to your corn or rolls. Soften your butter a bit in the microwave, or let it sit out for a while until it is room temperature. Try incorporating some herbs and spices to spice up the flavor of the corn. For example, you might use chipotle peppers, citrus juices or even honey.

They are known to soak up water like a sponge. Get a soft, clean and wet cloth to wipe the dirt off each individual mushroom for better results.

By completing some food preparation ahead of time you can simplify your cooking process. Recipes should be examined and items that won't spoil that can be prepared a day or two ahead should be done first. You can make a lot of your preparations a day or more in advance. Prepping before you cook can make even advanced recipes fun and accessible.

Buy a cooling rack that is able to be stacked. Especially if you are whipping up big batches of your favorites cookies or other goodies, the results of your baking can take up a considerable amount of space in your kitchen - space you could better utilize. The use of stackable cooling racks is an efficient way to utilize your kitchen space. When you stack vertically, you only need a few inches of spare space.

Add some zing to your stews, soups, and mashed potatoes by using stock instead of water. If you don't have those on hand, bouillon added to the water will also work. Bouillon cubes will provide an added level of moisture and flavor to your dish.
