The charcoals are ready to cook over once they are ash covered, and at medium heat. Grilling at this temperature is highly recommended.

If you are preparing a recipe that calls for milk or water, try substituting with an alternate liquid to add new flavor to your meals. You could use chicken broth or juice, instead of water. Sour cream, buttermilk and yogurt make good milk substitutes. Try making your recipes stand out and more nutritious by interchanging your liquids.

Many apples are purchased for cooking in winter and fall, but they will rot in a short period of time if they are not properly stored. You can keep apples fresh by storing them in a cool basement or refrigerator as warm or dry air makes them rot. If there is one apple that is rotten, it can make the rest of the apples go bad.

When serving salad to guests, you should never put salad dressing directly on it. You should have it to the side so that each person can use as much or as little as they want. It is much better to let guests add the amount of dressing that they prefer according to their needs. You should also provide a large variety of dressings to serve your guests.

Fix the crust of the pie. The dough of your pie crust can start to crack if you work it too hard. If this happens, sprinkle some cold water on the cracks, rub the dough gently with your finger. If cracks appear in the top portion of the crust you can brush it with some milk and then sprinkle a little sugar over the cracks. The crust will then have a wonderful glaze that will keep the cracks hidden after it's done baking.

If you have sauce left over after a meal, store the remainder in one or more ice cube trays and let it freeze. Take them out to use on another night when you'd like a no hassle home cooked meal. Simply reheat the sauce cubes slowly in a medium pan on your stove top. The sauce is still good after it is frozen.

To have especially flavor rich foods, produce your own stock. Made in large batches, it's easy to store in the freezer, if you use resealable plastic bags. By doing this, you'll always have great tasting homemade stock when you desire to create soups or other types of dishes. Creating your own stock can reduce preservatives in the concoction that you cook.

Timing is a crucial element when baking a cake. Though recommended cooking times are a great guideline for novice cake bakers, they can be misleading, because factors such as elevation can impact the actual cook time of the cake. To test for doneness, insert a clean toothpick into the center of the cake. If the toothpick has no batter on it, then the cake has finished baking. If it does have batter on it, then put the cake back in the oven.

Do you love to cook with fresh basil? Gather a bunch and put it into a glass. Make sure the stems are in water. It will remain fresh for a good amount of time just sitting on the kitchen counter! Your basil will even send out new roots if you change its water regularly. Encourage new growth by occasionally pinching back or trimming your basil.
