With its elegantly smooth texture, delightful taste variations, and bold appearance, it is no wonder that fondant has become the most popular decorated cake covering for weddings, showers, and other special events. If you find yourself working with this cake decorating marvel, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you make a beautiful cake.

Decorating with rolled fondant is nowhere near as difficult as it may seem. It is actually easier to work with than most other icing varieties. You can easily color it just about any shade that you like, covers the cake smoothly, and make some of the most gorgeous and sturdy flowers that can be used.

The first tip to working with this type of icing is to never let it get dry. When rolling or flattening your portions, only roll out the portion that you will be using right away. Otherwise, the texture will become very dry and hard to work with quite quickly. Keep all of the icing wrapped tightly in plastic wrap until just before you are ready to roll it out. If it does become a bit dry, add just a few drops of water and knead it in. In some cases this will bring it back to life.

Store the icing at room temperature until you are ready to use it. Icing that is too cold will be way too hard too work with or roll out. Icing that is too warm will become droopy and too thing to move around. If the icing feels to warm, you will need to cool it down before you continue using it.

When covering a cake with rolled fondant, always remember not to roll the icing too thin. If it is too thin, the icing will crack around edges and corners of the cake, which can cause a decorating disaster. Even if the cracks do night appear right away, it sometimes will separate after it has been setting for a while.

A buttercreme crumb coat should always be applied to the cake before any fondant is put on. The rolled icing will not adhere to a plain cake the way that other icings will. It will move and shift and can become quite brittle as it sets. Always apply an even coat of buttercreme in the same shade as the rolled icing to create an even appearance.

Decorating with rolled fondant icing is very simple to do with just a few tips and tricks. Not only is it easy to use, it is very fun to work with. Creating amazing cake creations can be made easy with the use of this type of icing.
